Guwahati Police Bans Rallies, Citing Traffic Chaos and Safety Concerns
In a significant move aimed at easing traffic congestion and ensuring smooth vehicular movement across the city, the Guwahati Police on Tuesday issued an order prohibiting all forms of rallies, processions, and public gatherings that obstruct roadways.
The directive, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, cites increasing disruptions caused by rallies, marathons, walkathons, and similar events. According to the police, such gatherings have been causing severe traffic snarls, delaying emergency services, and posing risks to public safety.
The order, signed by Imdad Ali, APS, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration), Guwahati, comes into effect immediately.
"Processions and rallies often lead to significant congestion, affecting free movement and creating serious inconvenience to commuters and emergency response systems," the statement read. "To minimize such disruptions and safeguard public safety, all such activities within Guwahati city limits are henceforth restricted."
Citizens found violating the directive will face legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the order warned.
The order comes at a time when the city has witnessed repeated public demonstrations and processions, often bringing major junctions to a standstill.
With this order now in effect, the city police are expected to ramp up enforcement to ensure compliance.
