Guwahati Police Secure Two Major Convictions in POCSO Cases
The Guwahati city police have achieved notable success with convictions in two separate POCSO(Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) cases registered at the Paltan Bazar Police Station.
According to officials, the swift and diligent investigation by the investigating officers (IOs), along with the timely filing of charge sheets, led to the convictions within a year of the cases being registered.
In one case (Case No. 105/24), a man named Chandan Bora was sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing a minor. He has also been fined ₹10,000. The court found him guilty under various sections of the POCSO Act. The case was investigated and charge-sheeted promptly by the Paltan Bazar Police.
In a second and even more severe case (Case No. 519/23), the court awarded life imprisonment to Jayanta Talukdar, who was found guilty of repeatedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Guwahati. The survivor was a relative of the accused.
The survivor had confided the abuse to a school teacher, who in turn informed the girl's family. Based on their complaint, an FIR was lodged at Paltan Bazar Police Station, following which the accused was arrested.
The court, after examining all evidence and testimonies, sentenced Jayanta Talukdar to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh.
WSI Jitumoni Rabha, who investigated the case, was credited for her thorough handling of the matter that helped secure a strong conviction.
The Guwahati Police Commissionerate lauded the efforts of all officers involved, stating that these outcomes demonstrate the force's commitment to ensuring justice for victims of heinous crimes, especially against children.
