A major cross-border fraud has come to light, leaving several self-driving car owners in Guwahati in deep trouble. As per reports, multiple vehicles rented out for self-driving use have reportedly been taken to Nepal and illegally mortgaged for money.
As per information received, a man identified as Somnath Mukherjee from Kolkata had rented several vehicles from Assam, including from Guwahati-based owners, under the pretext of personal use. However, instead of returning the vehicles, he allegedly took them across the India-Nepal border and pawned them off at various locations in Nepal for cash.
Mukherjee is also accused of pulling off similar frauds involving vehicles from West Bengal. Several of the vehicles from Assam have since been recovered from different locations across Nepal following coordinated operations.
Acting on intelligence, Chandmari Police had launched a joint operation along the Indo-Nepal border. Meanwhile, the West Bengal Police have arrested Somnath Mukherjee along with four other associates involved in the scam.
Somnath is currently being interrogated by officers at the Pradhan Nagar police station in West Bengal, as investigations into the wider network of this vehicle fraud continue.
