Assam Congress Leader Decries Arrests Without Evidence After CM Convoy Attack

Congress MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar on Tuesday condemned the recent attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s convoy, while also criticising the Assam Police for allegedly detaining Congress workers without proper evidence.

Reacting to the incident, Sikdar stated, “No vehicle belonging to any public leader should be attacked in this manner. Political differences must never turn violent. We had seen a similar incident in the past when Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah was attacked. Violence cannot be the answer.”

While demanding a fair and transparent investigation into the convoy attack, Sikdar added, “The real culprits must be identified and punished. The state government must conduct a proper inquiry to determine who was behind the attack and what their motives were. At the same time, the Congress party will also conduct its own internal probe into the matter.”

However, the Congress MLA raised strong objections to what he termed “unjustified arrests” of several party workers. “Our people have been picked up without any proof. This is unacceptable. Real Congress workers do not indulge in such criminal activities. The police must not act in haste or under political pressure,” Sikdar asserted.

BJP’s Cow Protection Stand ‘Hypocritical’, Says Congress

Shifting focus to the ruling BJP’s recent rhetoric around cow protection, Sikdar launched a scathing critique of the state government’s priorities.

“The Chief Minister is trying to politicise beef consumption by compiling a so-called list of beef consumers. The BJP talks big about cow protection, but the reality on the ground tells a different story,” he said.

Highlighting the inadequacies in the state’s veterinary infrastructure, Sikdar questioned, “How many veterinary hospitals do we have in Assam? Are there enough doctors for cattle? If the BJP truly cares about cow welfare, why has it failed to build proper veterinary services across the state?”

The Congress leader urged the government to shift its focus from divisive politics to real development. “Cow protection cannot be just a slogan. It needs proper infrastructure, policy, and political will. The BJP must answer why, despite being in power for years, it has done little to improve cattle healthcare in Assam,” he said.

Political Temperatures Rise

The remarks by Jakir Hussain Sikdar come amid heightened political tensions in Assam, following the attack on the CM’s convoy and the arrest of several Congress-affiliated individuals. While the BJP has accused the opposition of instigating unrest, the Congress maintains that the government is using the incident as a pretext to suppress political dissent.

As both parties prepare for the upcoming Assam assembly elections, such confrontations are likely to intensify, with governance, security, and identity politics taking centre stage.
