Barak Student Body Demands Gaurav Gogoi's Apology Over CM Convoy Attack

The All Cachar-Karimganj-Hailakandi Students' Association (ACKHSA) has announced a ban on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s entry into Barak Valley, demanding an unconditional apology for the recent attack on the Assam Chief Minister’s convoy.

Addressing a press conference, ACKHSA’s chief advisor Rupam Nandi Purkayastha issued a stern warning to Gogoi, stating that unless he apologises for the incident, he will not be allowed to set foot in the region. The press meet was organised in protest against the alleged bottle attack on CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s convoy during a recent Congress demonstration.

Purkayastha accused the Congress of attempting to unleash a wave of terror in the name of democracy. “This is not Kashmir, where one can resort to terrorist-style agitation,” he said, condemning the violent tactics used during the protest. He further alleged that Gaurav Gogoi has failed in his responsibilities as the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) and warned that such acts of aggression have no place in a civilised society.

Demanding stringent punishment for all Congress workers allegedly involved in the incident, ACKHSA said that attacking a Chief Minister’s convoy under the guise of protest reflects a deeply unhealthy political culture and cannot be tolerated.

The student body also called on the Congress leadership to take accountability and ensure that future protests remain within democratic norms.

Meanwhile, Congress MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar on Tuesday condemned the attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s convoy, urging that political differences should never lead to violence. He recalled a similar incident involving Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah and said, “Violence is never the answer.”

Sikdar demanded a fair probe to identify and punish the real culprits, but criticised the Assam Police for allegedly arresting Congress workers without evidence. “Our people are being picked up without proof. This is unacceptable. Real Congress workers don’t indulge in such acts,” he said, adding that the party will conduct its own internal inquiry.
