BJP Worker Raja Bailung Booked for Assault, Police Launch Manhunt

In a fresh controversy that has rocked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit in Jorhat, party worker Raja Bailung, known to be closely associated with BJP district president Shantanu Pujari, youth leader Sidhanku Ankura Baruah, and Shivchandra Hati Baruah, has been accused of hooliganism and assault.

A formal complaint has been lodged at the Jorhat Sadar Police Station against local BJP worker Raja Bailung, accusing him of assaulting a youth named Ankur, snatching his mobile phone, and taking away his scooter. Bailung, reportedly close to BJP district president Shantanu Pujari and youth leader Sidhanku Ankura Baruah, is now the subject of a police manhunt.

According to the FIR, the incident took place on Monday evening, when Ankur was called to the Garmur graveyard by Bailung. On reaching the spot, Ankur found Bailung and his associate, Pranjal Pran Bailung, waiting for him. Raja allegedly demanded that Ankur help resolve a legal case involving one of Ankur’s friends and even offered ₹1 lakh as an incentive.

When Ankur refused to cooperate, the situation escalated. Raja and Pranjal allegedly assaulted him, slapped him repeatedly, and threatened him with a broken beer bottle. Before the situation could worsen, Ankur fled the scene and headed straight to the police station, where he filed a complaint against the duo.

Police sources confirmed that Raja Bailung is not new to controversy. He has previously served jail time twice, once for publicly misbehaving with police personnel and another time for allegedly attempting to steal an elephant. The latter incident earned him the infamous nickname “guest of the red house,” a colloquial phrase in Assam referring to time spent in jail.

The BJP’s decision to induct individuals with such records into the party had earlier triggered internal debates and public backlash in Jorhat.

Following the latest complaint, Jorhat Police have launched an intensive manhunt for Raja, who is currently absconding.
