Two individuals named Burhan Uddin (38) and Faizur Rahman (38) have been arrested for attempting to procure an Indian passport for a Bangladeshi national using forged documents created in the name of a deceased Indian citizen.
Speaking to reporters, police officials said the racket came to light earlier this month when a passport application was submitted under the name Faruk Ahmed, a man who had already passed away. The deceased, originally from the Patharkandi region, had his identity stolen to falsely establish Indian citizenship for a foreign national.
"During routine verification, we noticed multiple discrepancies in the submitted documents, including the birth certificate, Aadhaar card, and PAN card, all of which were forged in the name of Faruk Ahmed," a senior officer said. "Our investigation revealed that the documents were fabricated to support a passport application for a Bangladeshi citizen."
Following the initial findings, the police launched a swift operation and arrested Burhan Uddin and Faizur Rahman, who were allegedly responsible for preparing the forged documents. A large cache of fake identity papers was seized from their possession.
Both accused were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court and have since been remanded to judicial custody.
Authorities suspect the involvement of a larger cross-border network engaged in fabricating and trafficking fake Indian identities. An in-depth investigation is underway to determine whether any government officials were complicit in the racket.
