Dhubri: Forest Stripped Bare, Locals Demand Tough Action From CM
In a shocking revelation, large-scale illegal logging has been reported in the Sarpomari Reserve Forest, part of the Shalkocha Regional Forest Division in Assam’s Chapar area, allegedly under the watch and protection of certain forest department officials.
According to local sources, valuable trees such as Sal are being felled indiscriminately, both day and night, reducing what was once a dense forest into a landscape of devastation. The illegal activity is reportedly being carried out with the backing of some forest officials themselves, with the Officer-in-Charge of the Shalkocha Division under particular suspicion.
This revelation has sparked serious concern among environmental activists and concerned citizens, especially at a time when Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is actively promoting the Amrit Brikshya Andolan, a state-wide tree plantation campaign aimed at environmental restoration. While the Chief Minister advocates for green growth, reports of widespread tree felling by people allegedly within the system have angered locals.
Residents have now urged the Chief Minister to intervene, identify those involved in the destruction of forest resources, and ensure strict punishment for all responsible parties.
Eyewitness accounts and visuals from the Sarpomari Reserve Forest clearly show that not just a few, but numerous valuable trees have been cut down, suggesting a systematic and well-organised operation.
Disturbingly, the forest officer in question has also been accused of issuing veiled threats to those attempting to report the matter. Journalists and whistleblowers have allegedly been warned not to enter the forest area, and even threatened with legal consequences for exposing the illegal logging.
With the issue now out in the open, all eyes are on the Forest Department to see whether it will act decisively to halt the destruction and hold the culprits, including any complicit officials, accountable.
