Ashwani Kumar, DITEC Director Assam, Unveils Internship Initiative For Engineering Students

Spearheaded by Ashwani Kumar, IAS, Director of DITEC, the initiative seeks to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry demands by immersing students in live projects focused on digital governance, public service delivery platforms, and emerging technologies.

The internship will be conducted at DITEC’s headquarters in Guwahati and will span a duration of 4 to 8 weeks, based on academic requirements. Selected interns will collaborate closely with senior officials and technical teams, gaining first-hand experience in the implementation of government-led digital initiatives. Upon successful completion, participants will receive certificates issued by the Directorate.

Key Objectives and Benefits

This internship programme is designed not only to equip students with practical technical skills but also to foster innovation, digital leadership, and long-term professional development. A central objective is to facilitate the real-world application of classroom knowledge through direct engagement with digital governance projects. It also serves as a platform for early talent identification by assessing students’ performance, adaptability, and professional conduct in live environments.

The programme aims to retain local talent by offering meaningful technical opportunities within Assam, addressing the ongoing challenge of brain drain. Interns will be exposed to modern tools and technologies aligned with current industry practices, helping bridge the gap between academia and industry. Additionally, the initiative focuses on enhancing communication, collaboration, and structured reporting skills while also encouraging research-oriented and problem-solving mindsets.

By supporting key government digital projects at minimal cost, the internship offers mutual benefits for both the government and participating students. It also boosts the reputation of Assam’s technical institutions through the success of their students and empowers youth from rural or underrepresented backgrounds with valuable exposure and confidence.

Furthermore, the programme promotes entrepreneurship and innovation by familiarising students with product design and development ecosystems. It reinforces long-term collaboration between the government and academia, and contributes meaningfully to Assam’s broader vision of becoming a hub for technology and innovation by nurturing a skilled, tech-ready youth population.

Officials from DITEC expressed confidence that this initiative will inspire a new generation of engineers to engage deeply with technology-driven public service, while enhancing Assam’s stature as an emerging technology-forward state.
