Former Dainik Asam editor and academic Dr. Hitesh Deka has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of Nagaon University. His appointment, formalised by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya through an official notification on Monday, stands out for more than just academic credentials—given Deka’s long-standing reputation as a vocal critic of government policies.
The decision to appoint Dr. Deka to head a government-run university has raised concerns among observers, considering his past editorial positions and independent stance.
Dr. Deka was widely regarded as a strong critic of the government, particularly during his tenure as editor of Dainik Asam.
Dr. Deka was among seven Vice Chancellors appointed across state universities in Assam.
The full list of appointments includes:
Dr. Hitesh Deka – Vice Chancellor, Nagaon University
Jyotiprasad Saikia – Vice Chancellor, Jagannath Barooah University
Dr. Mahadev Patgiri – Vice Chancellor, Sivasagar University
Prof. Mukul Bora – Vice Chancellor, North Lakhimpur University
Dr. Tarini Chandra Deka – Vice Chancellor, Bongaigaon University
Niranjan Roy – Vice Chancellor, Gurucharan University
Ganesh Chandra Wary – Vice Chancellor, Kokrajhar University
