The achievement was announced by Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri in a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He lauded the efforts of ONGC’s Crisis Management Team, which worked in coordination with international well control experts to resolve the emergency safely and efficiently.

Puri noted that the meticulous planning and joint efforts ensured the blowout was contained without any injuries, casualties, or fire, demonstrating the high level of competence and preparedness of the crisis response teams.

The minister also expressed gratitude to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state government officials for their consistent support throughout the operation. Their assistance was crucial in enabling the smooth execution of the response efforts on the ground.

The successful capping of the well marks a significant milestone in ONGC’s operational capabilities and reflects India’s growing expertise in managing high-risk energy infrastructure incidents.

In response, Sarma wrote, “Thank you Hon’ble Minister Shri @HardeepSPuri Ji for your exceptional leadership and persistence in sealing the gas leak at #RDS147A, Sivasagar — which had been a major concern for all of us.”

He also acknowledged the tireless efforts of ONGC’s response teams and the state administration, praising their coordination and commitment throughout the two-week-long crisis.

“But above all,” he added, “my deepest gratitude goes to the brave men and women of Sivasagar, especially those living in the affected areas, for their extraordinary resilience and unwavering cooperation with all agencies involved.”

Sarma’s message comes as the region begins to recover from the ordeal, with the successful containment of the leak marking a significant relief for the local community and administration.
