FIR Filed Against Youth Congress Members After Protest in Golaghat

A formal FIR has been filed by Mintu Handique, Inspector of Police, Golaghat DEF, against members of the Youth Congress, Golaghat District Committee, following a protest that allegedly turned hostile during two high-profile VVIP programmes held in the town today.

The events were organized at the Government Bezbaroa Sports Complex and the GDSA Indoor Stadium, both of which saw the deployment of significant police personnel to ensure law and order. As per the official complaint, Youth Congress members staged a demonstration at the Congress Bhawan, Golaghat, in protest against Hon’ble Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah over the ongoing controversy surrounding Gir cows.

According to the FIR, the Youth Congress activists were seen shouting slogans and attempting to wave black flags in protest. Police personnel seized eight black flags from the protestors. The situation reportedly escalated when the agitators tried to move onto the main road, prompting police to confine them inside the Congress Bhawan to prevent any disruption of the VVIP programmes.

However, at around 1:20 PM, a major incident occurred. As per the FIR, some miscreants allegedly hurled a green plastic bottle (1 litre) from the Congress Bhawan premises towards the convoy of Assam’s Agriculture Minister Atul Bora. The bottle reportedly hit a KIA vehicle (Reg. No. AS-01GF-6600) that was part of the convoy.

Inspector Handique, in his FIR, claimed that this act not only endangered the safety and security of a sitting minister but also indicated a larger "criminal conspiracy" aimed at threatening the authority of the democratically elected government. The FIR further states that such acts could potentially "jeopardize the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India," and accused the Youth Congress of attempting to incite enmity and disturb public harmony.

The police have sought to book the Youth Congress members under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including:

  • Section 61(2): Criminal Conspiracy

  • Section 191(2): Rioting

  • Section 196: Promoting enmity between different groups

  • Section 152: Act endangering sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India

  • Section 352: Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace

Inspector Handique has urged that a case be registered under the aforementioned sections and called for a thorough investigation into the matter.

As of now, there has been no official statement from the Youth Congress or the Congress Party in response to the FIR. The incident comes at a time when political tensions are high in Assam, with various opposition groups stepping up protests against the BJP-led state government over multiple issues.

Further developments are awaited.
