In a shocking incident late on Saturday night, a firing took place near the Hatibandha pond under Kalaigaon Police Station in Assam's Udalguri district.
Eyewitnesses said that a person named Rebo Boro and a group of about five others were sitting by the pond when Golap Kachari of Barakhata suddenly arrived in his four-wheeler and engaged in a heated argument with Rebo Boro.
As per sources, the situation escalated quickly when Golap Kachari allegedly drew a pistol from his vehicle and fired two rounds into the air before aiming and shooting directly at Rebo Boro. The bullet struck Boro, while another individual, Kulen Boro, also sustained injuries during the commotion.
Boro, who was critically injured, was immediately shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for advanced treatment. The sound of gunfire alarmed residents, who rushed to the spot and managed to overpower Golap Kachari. He was physically restrained and handed over to the police after being given a public beating.
The incident, coming just ahead of the upcoming elections in BTR, has triggered widespread concern among the local population. Several organizations have strongly condemned the incident and demanded a high-level probe into how such illegal firearms are being circulated in the region.
However, what has further fueled public suspicion is the conspicuous silence of the Udalguri police regarding the entire episode. No official statement has yet been released, raising questions about possible lapses or a cover-up.
Residents and civil society groups have urged the administration to act swiftly, ensure justice for the victims, and crack down on the illegal possession of deadly weapons, especially during a politically sensitive period.
