The two minor girls who were found hanging in a tree in Kokrajhar district have been raped and murdered, confirmed police.
The Assam Police has already identified the culprits involved in the crime. So far, 7 arrests have been made in connection with the brutal incident.
Sharing the breakthrough, Assam chief minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, "The rape and murder of two minor tribal Girls have been been solved. @lrbishnoiassam, IGP,BTR called me to inform about the outcome of the investigation. I have visited their residence on Sunday. Feeling extremely a sense of satisfaction that the Culprits have been identified."
Two minor sisters were found hanging from a tree in a village in Kokrajhar district with their family members claiming that they were raped and killed, police said on Saturday.
The incident took place inside a small forest in Abhayakuti village, where the bodies of the two siblings were recovered late on Friday evening, a senior police officer said.
The bodies were sent to Kokrajhar Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination, he said.
"A case has been registered. A preliminary investigation suggested that the two girls suspectedly ended their lives. We will be able to tell after receiving the post-mortem reports," the officer said.
Villagers were shocked at the incident, while the family members and relatives of the two girls claimed that they were raped and killed.
Locals also said the two sisters were missing since Friday afternoon.
Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma also visited the family of the deceased minors on Sunday and instructed the police department to take stern action against the culprits.
