Train services through the crucial Lumding–Badarpur hill section in Assam have been suspended after a massive landslip and boulder fall blocked the railway tracks between New Haflong and Jatinga Lampur. The disruption, attributed to improper road repair work carried out by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has led to the cancellation and short termination of multiple trains affecting connectivity to key northeastern states including Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
Cause of Disruption
According to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the mishap occurred due to faulty slope protection during road repair operations by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). As a result, a large landmass and boulders shifted from the road onto the railway track, significantly damaging the alignment. Water from the road is also flowing directly onto the railway line, further destabilizing the area and making it unsafe for train movement.
Rail traffic between Lumding, New Haflong, and Badarpur has been suspended with immediate effect to ensure the safety of passengers.

In a formal communication, the Lumding Division of NFR has asked NHAI to ensure no repeat of such incidents that jeopardize the only rail lifeline to the southern Assam districts and landlocked northeastern states.
