Former All Assam Minorities Students’ Union (AAMSU) president Rejaul Karim Sarkar has quit the Indian National Congress, citing serious differences with the party’s leadership in Assam.
In his resignation letter dated January 14, 2026, addressed to Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi, Sarkar said he had joined the Congress because of its secular outlook, inclusive ideology and commitment to constitutional values.
However, he claimed that recent remarks and positions taken by senior party leaders had left him deeply disappointed.
Sarkar said statements made by Assam Congress Legislature Party leader Debabrata Saikia and Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi caused him “moral and ideological pain” and had affected both his motivation and public image. He alleged that their stand on recent issues made it difficult for him to continue in the party.
In the letter, Sarkar went a step further, accusing the two leaders of behaving like “BJP agents” and said their role within the party forced him to take the decision to resign.
“In these circumstances, i find it difficult to continue my association with the party..." he wrote, resigning from the party’s primary membership with immediate effect, while still wishing the party well.
Rejaul Karim Sarkar is known as a prominent minority youth leader in Assam and previously headed the All Assam Minorities Students’ Union.
So far, there has been no official response from the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee or from the leaders named in the resignation letter.
