In a shocking case of domestic violence and betrayal, Noren Tanti , the president of the Sivasagar district unit of the All Adivasi Students' Association of Assam (AASAA), has been arrested for the brutal murder of his wife, Dipti  Tanti . The crime, committed with the help of a contract killer, has sent shockwaves across Assam's Sivasagar district.

Wife Strangled, Dumped in River for Rs 20,000

According to police sources, the incident occurred on the night of June 15, 2025, when Noren Tanti strangled his wife Dipti at their residence in Kharahat, Demow. He later transported the body in his personal vehicle, with assistance from a hired killer, Deep Pandav, who reportedly received Rs 20,000 for the act.

Dipti’s hands were tied before her body was dumped into the Disang River near Akhaiputia in an attempt to dispose of evidence.

Husband Pretended She Was Missing, Posted Appeals Online

In a calculated move to mislead law enforcement, Noren Tanti filed a missing person’s report at Demow Police Station, claiming his wife had disappeared. He also shared her photograph on social media, urging people to help locate her—an act that further intensified public sympathy and misdirection.

However, within a week, Dipti Tanti ’s decomposed body was recovered from the Disang River, unravelling the entire plot and exposing the gruesome truth.

Police Arrest Noren Tanti and Contract Killer After Swift Probe

Acting on strong suspicion, Demow and Sivasagar police launched a joint investigation, which resulted in the arrest of both Noren Tanti and Deep Pandav. The accused have since confessed to their involvement in the murder during police interrogation.

A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Demow Police S Tanti on (Case No. 40/25), under Sections 140(1) and 103(1). The two accused are currently in police custody.

ATSA Demow Condemns Murder, Demands Justice

Reacting strongly to the incident, Bishwanath Nag, secretary of Assam Tea Tribes Students Association's (ATSA) Demow regional unit, condemned the murder, describing it as a shameful act by someone who held a position of leadership.

“We demand strict punishment and a speedy trial. No leniency should be shown to someone who has committed such a heinous crime,” Nag stated.

Public Outrage Grows in Sivasagar Over Shocking Crime

It may be mentioned that the murder has sparked massive outrage across Sivasagar and beyond, with many questioning how someone in a public leadership role could commit such a cold-blooded act. Locals and civil society organisations are demanding exemplary punishment for both the accused to serve as a deterrent against gender-based violence and domestic crime.
