According to police, the crime is believed to have been committed between May 25 and May 28, 2025. The accused, 25-year-old Donald Sohtun from Mylliem Mawpynthih village, has been arrested in connection with the crime. Priya Khongstia, originally from Umñiuh Tmar village, was his wife.

Police confirmed the arrest and said that the murder weapon,a stone, was recovered with the help of a K9 unit. The dog tracked the scent from an item belonging to the victim and led investigators to the stone, which had been discarded near the scene.

The FIR was filed by the victim’s family the day after the alleged incident. Police suspect that the murder followed a heated argument between the couple, during which the husband accused his wife of infidelity. The confrontation escalated violently, leading to Priya’s death.

Taking serious note of the case, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Director General of Police, Meghalaya, demanding the immediate arrest of all involved (if any) and a time-bound, fair investigation under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The Commission has also sought a copy of the FIR and a detailed Action Taken Report within three days.

In a post on X, the Commission stated: “The National Commission for Women has taken suo moto cognizance of a media report titled 'Shillong Woman Killed by Husband With Stone, Body Found Wrapped in Blanket.'”

In another horrifying case, the NCW has also taken suo motu notice of the gang-rape of a 20-year-old college student at Gopalpur beach in Odisha’s Ganjam district. The NCW has urged Odisha’s DGP Y.B. Khurania to ensure the immediate arrest of all remaining accused and provide medical and psychological support to the survivor.

The Commission has asked the Odisha government to submit an Action Taken Report within three days and has demanded compensation for the survivor.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has strongly condemned the incident, calling it “a crime against humanity.” In a statement, the Chief Minister’s Office assured that strict and exemplary action would be taken against the culprits and no one involved would be spared.
