Stone Hurled at MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi’s Vehicle Near Assam’s Bokakhat

A major security scare erupted in Assam's Bokakhat on Wednesday evening after Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi and his family came under attack near the Borchapori Tea Estate, close to the Kuruabahi Tinali area. Unidentified miscreants reportedly hurled a stone at Kurmi’s vehicle, causing significant damage and minor injuries to the occupants.

The incident occurred while the veteran legislator was en route to Guwahati after attending multiple programs.

Speaking to the media shortly after the attack, Kurmi recounted the harrowing experience, saying:

“Today, after completing several programs, I was on my way to Guwahati. Near Borchapori Tea Garden, I noticed a young man standing with a stone in his hand. I never imagined he would actually throw it at me. As I got closer — I was driving myself — he suddenly hurled the stone. It shattered the entire front glass. The car is now in no condition to drive. I’ve been an MLA for 20 years and never faced anything like this.”

Kurmi further confirmed that his mother-in-law and young daughter were also in the car at the time of the attack. All three suffered minor injuries.

“I’m a little injured, my mother-in-law is hurt, and even my daughter has been affected. I’ve informed the local police. I urge the authorities to thoroughly investigate this and ensure that the perpetrator is brought to justice,” Kurmi added.

The stone, reportedly thrown at close range, struck the front windshield with immense force, completely shattering it. The suddenness of the attack left no time for reaction or for identifying the assailant.

Local residents and eyewitnesses said the entire episode unfolded within seconds, plunging the area into tension and confusion. The attack has since sparked widespread concern and condemnation across the region, especially given the presence of a child in the vehicle.

Police from Bokakhat arrived at the scene soon after the incident and have launched a full-scale investigation. As of now, the identity and motive of the attacker remain unknown.
