In the quiet hills of Manipur's Senapati district, 38-year-old Nelly Chacheya is spreading hope through her hands. While the state has been going through a long stretch of unrest and tension, Nelly has quietly built something beautiful - handmade dolls crafted from corn husks and silk, the parts most people throw away.

A florist by profession, Nelly began making these unique dolls as a way to reuse waste and bring joy to others.

“I started using corn peel and husk to make dolls,” she says. “I love turning something people ignore into something beautiful.” The dolls have bodies made from corn husk and soft hair made from corn silk. Some are decorated with dried flowers, all painted with care and attention.

Though simple, each doll reflects patience and love. What started as a small hobby during difficult times has now grown into a small business. People from nearby towns, and even outside the state, are showing interest in her work. Her studio in Senapati, once just a florist’s space, is now a spot where visitors come to see her creations. “I came for flowers but stayed for the dolls,” said a visitor named Rachoyia. “She makes something so beautiful from what others throw away.”

Nelly also takes custom orders, making each doll match the buyer’s taste. Young girls especially adore them. Her work is not just creative—it’s also inspiring, reminding others that even during hard times, something good can grow.

Even as Manipur slowly heals from months of unrest, women like Nelly are quietly leading with strength, hope, and hard work. Across villages, more women are starting small businesses, using their skills to earn and support their families.
