According to reports, the two girls, originally from Lumding, were brought to Jorhat by Uttam Mandal and Geeta Mandal under the pretext of providing them education. However, instead of being enrolled in school, the girls were subjected to sustained and cruel physical torture at the hands of the couple. It is unclear as to how these two girls are related to them.

The abuse, described by locals as “Taliban-style punishment,” reportedly included slashing the girls' hands and rubbing salt into the wounds. Visible injury marks were found on both girls, clearly indicating repeated acts of physical assault.

The minors endured this brutality almost daily until locals, alarmed by the situation, informed the Jorhat Child Welfare Committee. Acting on the tip-off, the Committee rescued the girls. Despite the rescue and medical evidence of injuries, no immediate legal action was taken against the accused couple, leading to public outrage.

Following continued pressure from local residents, a formal complaint was lodged at the Jorhat Sadar Police Station. On Tuesday night, police arrested Uttam Mondal and Geeta Mondal for their alleged role in the abuse.

Further investigation is underway.
