Congress leader Mira Borthakur has hit out at the Assam government and state police following the recent incident in Golaghat where a bottle was allegedly thrown at Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s convoy.

Sharing a slow-motion clip of the incident, she said the police were arresting people randomly without properly identifying who actually threw the bottle.

"Throwing a bottle at the Chief Minister's vehicle in protest is never acceptable. But at the same time, it is equally wrong for the police to randomly arrest people without properly identifying the actual culprits. The slow-motion video tells a slightly different story,” Borthakur said.

The incident took place near Rajiv Bhawan in Golaghat, where Congress workers wearing black badges were staging a protest. The demonstration was part of a wider agitation demanding an impartial probe into the alleged illegal sale of Gir cows - a controversy the Opposition claims involves senior ministers and powerful individuals, including minister Jayanta Malla Baruah.

Borthakur accused the Chief Minister of deliberately sidestepping the real issue. “Let us focus on whether there will be a real investigation into the Gir cow matter. If the Chief Minister keeps deflecting with talk about beef-eating during Eid, the truth will never come out. We need a proper judicial probe - only then will we know from which holes the snakes are coming out,” she said.

Expressing concern over the state of politics, she added, “It’s disturbing to see how low politics has fallen, that a Chief Minister would go to such lengths, saying provocative things to cover up a serious issue, is deeply disappointing.”

She further urged CM Sarma to refrain from making statements that might provoke or mislead the youth. “They’re already frustrated. We don’t need to add fuel to the fire,” she said.

Notably, at least six individuals, including Congress leaders, have been detained in connection with the bottle-throwing incident. Among them are Pallab Chetia, Secretary of the Golaghat District Congress Committee, and Rahul Phukan, son of a former Block Congress Secretary. Both are known associates of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi.

Moreover, the Golaghat police later released four of the detained Congress workers, identified as Partha Sarathi Bora, Rupantar Totoi, Trishna Sootea, and Rahul Saikia, after failing to find any evidence linking them to the incident.

Tensions had flared in Golaghat on Monday as the Chief Minister arrived to inaugurate a new indoor stadium near the district Congress office. Protesters waved black flags and demanded justice in the so-called “Goru Sur” (cow theft) scandal.

In response, CM Sarma launched a sharp counterattack, branding the Congress as hypocritical. He named Congress leaders including Rakibul Hussain, Rekibuddin Ahmed, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, and Nurul Huda, alleging that they consumed beef and had no right to speak on cow protection. He also claimed that nearly 1,400 cows were slaughtered during Bakri Eid in Dhubri. “We protect cows even when they’re dying, but Congress sacrifices them in Kurbani,” he added.
