The sector has rebounded after witnessing a dip in 2023–24, when production fell to 354.74 million tonnes from 355.54 million tonnes in the previous year—mainly due to a sharp 20% decline in onion output.

Despite fluctuations, horticultural production continues to outpace food grain output in absolute terms, though the latter has recorded higher growth in recent years. Food grain production for 2024–25 is estimated at a record 353.2 million tonnes, marking a 6% increase over the previous crop year.

The area under horticulture also saw a marginal expansion, rising to 29.2 million hectares in 2024–25 from 29.08 million hectares the year before.

In terms of specific categories, fruit production—including mangoes and bananas—rose by 1.36% to 114.5 million tonnes. Meanwhile, vegetable output, including key crops such as onions, potatoes, and tomatoes, surged by 6% to 219.6 million tonnes. Notably, potato production grew by 26% to 60.17 million tonnes, while onion production rose 5.46% to 57.05 million tonnes.

According to an official statement, horticulture continues to play a vital role in the agricultural economy, contributing around 33% to the sector’s Gross Value Added (GVA).
