The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre has reported a strong performance in the April to June quarter of 2025, with total tea sales reaching 32.21 million kilograms. This marks a significant increase from 25.37 million kilograms sold during the same period last year, reflecting a 27 percent year-on-year growth.
Dinesh Bihani, Secretary of the Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association, said the increase was largely supported by active participation from international buyers and continued demand for quality teas.
CTC teas continued to be the most traded category, with sales rising from 16.17 million kilograms in 2024 to 20.46 million kilograms this year. However, the average price for this category fell by about 14 rupees per kilogram compared to last year.
Dust teas also saw an improvement, with sales reaching 9.82 million kilograms, up from 8.25 million kilograms in the same quarter last year. Prices in this segment rose as well, averaging around 240 rupees per kilogram compared to 225 rupees last year.
Orthodox teas recorded the most notable growth. Sales doubled from 0.94 million kilograms last year to 1.92 million kilograms this quarter. Prices also climbed, with the average reaching nearly 280 rupees per kilogram, which is over 16 rupees higher than last year.
Bihani added that the increased share of teas being sold at premium rates shows strong demand in the market. About 22 percent of CTC leaf and 30 percent of dust teas were sold for more than 300 rupees per kilogram. Around 38 percent of CTC leaf and 29 percent of dust teas were sold in the 200 to 299 rupees range. Nearly 40 percent of both tea categories were sold between 100 and 199 rupees.
