The accused has been identified as Mridupaban Pathak, son of Bulanta Pathak, and a resident of Barpeta. He was apprehended from his hometown and, according to police, has confessed to committing the act.

The incident took place at a mosque located on Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Path in Puran Basti under Dispur Police Station. A transparent plastic packet was found inside the mosque premises. Inside was raw pork, along with a note written in a mix of Assamese and English.

The message read: “You got me pregnant. Now you eat pork. From Plabita Das.” The word "PORK" was written in bold letters on the packet, which also carried a mobile phone number.

Soon after the packet was discovered, police reached the spot and began an investigation. The contents were seized for forensic testing and the handwriting and mobile number mentioned are being verified.

According to police sources, the motive behind the shocking incident was personal revenge. Pathak had allegedly been harassing a young woman (Plabita Das) after she repeatedly rejected his romantic advances. When she finally blocked his number, he decided to publicly malign her by attaching her name and number to a fabricated note, which he placed inside the pork packet.

The arrest comes just days after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma warned against provocative acts targeting religious sites. Speaking to the media recently, the Chief Minister had said, “If people throw beef in front of temples, others might start placing pork near mosques. We don’t want such things to happen.” He had urged everyone to maintain peace and not indulge in actions that could lead to communal flare-ups.

The Chief Minister had also mentioned that over 60 people were arrested across the state during Bakrid for allegedly attempting to provoke tension by dumping beef or cattle parts near Hindu places of worship.
