In a historic development for Mizoram, its capital Aizawl is all set to be connected to the Indian Railways network for the first time with the completion of the 51.38-kilometre Bairabi–Sairang broad gauge railway line.
The ambitious project, now fully completed, awaits official inauguration and is poised to significantly boost connectivity and economic growth in the northeastern state.
The rail link connects Aizawl with Silchar in Assam, thereby integrating Mizoram into the national railway grid. The project features 48 tunnels and numerous bridges, including the second-highest railway bridge in Northeast India, making it an engineering marvel in a region known for difficult terrain and frequent landslides.
Chief Engineer of the Bairabi–Sairang project, Vinod Kumar, revealed that the railway line was sanctioned in 2008–09 and was later upgraded to a National Project. Land acquisition was completed by 2014, after which Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone on November 29, 2014. The project has now reached completion within his tenure, marking a major milestone in the government’s infrastructure development push for the Northeast.
“The region’s prolonged monsoon, frequent landslides, and labour constraints—given the dependence on workforce from other states—were among the biggest challenges we faced,” Kumar said. “Despite all hurdles, the project was designed to be resilient during heavy rains. The structure is built to last for over a century.”
This strategic infrastructure development is expected to enhance economic opportunities, ease transportation of goods and people, and integrate Mizoram more closely with the rest of India. The upcoming inauguration will mark a new chapter in the state's connectivity journey.
