Assam Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker and senior BJP leader Dr. Numal Momin hit out at the Congress, accusing the party of long-standing neglect and exploitation of Assam’s tribal communities.
Reacting to recent comments made by Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi, who accused the BJP-led government of diluting tribal autonomy, Momin dismissed the claims as “totally baseless.” He countered by alleging that it was during the Congress’s decades-long rule that tribal regions such as the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Dima Hasao, and Karbi Anglong witnessed widespread terrorism and atrocities.
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, tribal areas are finally seeing real development,” Momin said. “Whether it’s a medical college, a central university, or better roads and healthcare, we are delivering where the Congress never did.”
The BJP leader accused Congress of using tribal communities, along with minorities and tea tribes, as mere vote banks. “For years, they made promises and gave out money and alcohol during elections to buy votes, but never worked for these people’s real progress. Now, people have seen through it,” he added.
Momin’s remarks come as the political temperature begins to rise ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. Taking direct aim at the Congress leadership, he said, “The people of BTR, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao are happy today. They’re actively participating in the government’s development initiatives. Gaurav Gogoi should look at his own party’s record before pointing fingers.”
Highlighting recent government efforts, Momin said that ongoing development projects — including universities, stadiums, better roads, and healthcare facilities — are evidence of the BJP's commitment to tribal regions. “People now feel the difference. That’s why Congress has been defeated twice, and they’ll lose for the third time in 2026.”
Addressing the state’s eviction drives, Momin said the actions were aimed at removing illegal encroachments, particularly by "illegal Bangladeshi settlers" occupying religious, agricultural, and forest lands.
“Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is doing what people of Assam have long demanded. That’s why the public supports him,” he added.
He claimed the Congress is now “nervous” as it lacks real issues to raise ahead of the next elections. “They are just throwing random allegations, but the people of Assam will give them a fitting reply in 2026,” Momin said.
