Conservative activist and right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk has died after he was shot in the neck on Wednesday while speaking at Utah Valley University, according to reports in The New York Times.

The incident happened about 20 minutes into Kirk’s presentation when gunfire was heard from a nearby building on campus. The university later confirmed that “a single shot was fired on campus toward a visiting speaker.”

The suspect is said to be still at large.

Kirk was the only person injured. Videos shared on social media show students rushing to safety after the gunfire, and one clip appears to show Kirk falling back as blood came from his neck. He had been seated under a tent with the slogan “The American Comeback” when the shooting occurred.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump took to Truth Social and wrote, “"The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!"

The FBI confirmed that its Utah office is responding to the incident. In a post on X, FBI Director Kash Patel said, “We are closely monitoring reports of the tragic shooting involving Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Our thoughts are with Charlie, his loved ones, and everyone affected.”

Utah Governor Spencer Cox said he is being briefed by law enforcement. Writing on social media, he added, “We will continue to share updates. Those responsible will be held fully accountable. Violence has no place in our public life.”

Republican leaders quickly reacted to the attack. Senator Lindsey Graham called the shooting a “sick and despicable attack,” while Senators Ted Cruz and Katie Britt joined others in offering prayers.
