BRICS Summit: Modi Demands Credible Voice for Global South
Addressing the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday underscored the urgent need for inclusive reforms in global governance, stating that the voice of the Global South is more important than ever before.
Speaking at the session on ‘Peace and Security and Reform of Global Governance,’ Modi emphasized that international institutions must provide adequate representation to the Global South to maintain their credibility and effectiveness. “Without the participation of developing nations, no global order can claim legitimacy or deliver lasting solutions,” the Prime Minister said.
His remarks set the tone for the two-day summit, which brings together leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa to deliberate on a range of pressing global issues. The agenda includes multilateralism, economic challenges, artificial intelligence, climate change, and global health.
This year’s summit, hosted by Brazil, carries the theme “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.” It also holds special significance for India, which will assume the BRICS Chairship in 2026.
PM Modi, who was welcomed by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his arrival, is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders on the sidelines of the summit. On Monday, discussions will continue with a focus on environmental cooperation, preparations for COP30, and public health.
India, a founding member of BRICS, has consistently championed the interests of the Global South and advocated for a multipolar, democratic, and equitable world order.
