PM Modi Embarks on Longest Foreign Tour in Nearly a Decade

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has departed on an extensive eight-day diplomatic mission spanning five nations — Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. This marks the longest overseas visit undertaken by the prime minister in nearly a decade and underscores India’s renewed diplomatic focus across Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

In an official statement released ahead of his departure, the prime minister expressed optimism about the multi-nation journey. “In the coming days, I will engage in a range of bilateral and multilateral discussions in Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. I look forward to meaningful dialogues with global leaders to explore ways to create a more sustainable and inclusive world,” he said.

Diplomatic Milestones in Ghana and Trinidad & Tobago

The first leg of the tour takes Modi to Ghana — a visit of historic significance, as it will be the first by an Indian prime minister in almost 30 years. The trip aims to strengthen Indo-African ties, focusing on economic cooperation, cultural exchange, and capacity-building partnerships.

Following Ghana, the prime minister will travel to Trinidad and Tobago. This Caribbean stop also marks a major diplomatic moment, being the first high-level Indian visit in 27 years. Both nations share deep-rooted cultural and historical connections, and the visit is expected to focus on strengthening people-to-people ties, trade, and technology collaboration.

Strengthening Ties in Argentina and Brazil

PM Modi’s third stop is Argentina, where he will meet President Javier Milei. This bilateral visit — the first between Indian and Argentine leaders in 57 years — is poised to deepen cooperation in areas such as renewable energy, agricultural technology, and pharmaceuticals. Argentina’s strategic location and growing partnership with India make this a significant step in expanding New Delhi’s outreach in South America.

From Buenos Aires, the prime minister will travel to Brazil to participate in the BRICS 2025 Summit. The gathering of leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa will center on multilateral cooperation, reforming global governance institutions, and addressing climate change and development challenges.

A Landmark Visit to Namibia

The final stop of the tour will be Namibia — another country receiving an Indian head of government after nearly three decades. In Windhoek, Modi is scheduled to meet with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and will address the Namibian Parliament. The visit is expected to spotlight India’s engagement with southern Africa, particularly in areas like wildlife conservation, mineral resources, and education.
