Cyclone Fani hits coast, India prays for Odisha

The Cyclone Fani hit Odisha and made its landfall nearGopalpur and Puri as India Prays for Odisha even as authorities moved 11 lakhpeople to safety while Centre, State, Defence Forces and non-government sectorhave mounted a humungous operation to minimize the damage.


Heavy rain and wind have swept the Puri town aswell as, and all the railway stations and airports have been shut down asOdisha is about to be cut off from the rest of the country in coming hours.


The Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself ismonitoring the situation while all the other states in the cyclone flight pathstarting from West Bengal to Assam are getting ready for the storm and heavyrainfall that are going to start from tomorrow onwards.
The cyclone hit Odisha with a maximum sustainedwind speed of 170-180 kmph, which is expected to rise to 200 kmph. Cyclone Fani– billed as the most severe cyclonic storm since the super cyclone of 1999 andaround 10,000 villages and more than 50 towns lie on its path.


All flights from Bhubaneswar have been cancelledfrom midnight, Kolkata airport is also shut. A total of 140 trains including 83passenger trains have been cancelled so far. After crossing Odisha, cycloneFani is likely to move towards West Bengal before tapering off.
