10 Years Jail to Mizoram Youth for Drug Peddling

Aspecial court in Mizoram's Champhai district has convicted an 18-year old boy fordrug peddling and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.

Thecourt also slapped a fine of Rs. 1lakh on him, said State Excise and Narcoticsdepartment.

The drug peddler Salemthara has been awarded 10 years of imprisonment by Vanlalena, judge of the special court. Salemthara is a resident of Champhai town near Mizoram-Myanmar border, for possessing of 307 grams of heroin and on Thursday sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.

Accordingto state officials, if Salemthara does not deposit the fine, he will have toserve an additional six months in jail.

Salemtharawas arrested on June 24, 2018 by state excise and narcotics departmentofficials in Champhai town and booked under relevant provisions of the NarcoticDrugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
