63,959 declared as foreigners from 1985: MHA

A total of 63,959 persons have been declared foreigners through ex-parte proceedings by Foreigners' Tribunals in Assam from 1985 to 28th February 2019. There is a total of six numbers of Detention Centres designated to hold "Declared Foreigners" in the State of Assam : MHA said.

The reply came from Minister of State for Home Affairs, G. Kishan Reddy during a Lok Sabha question raised by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.

As per the information provided by Reddy, the total number of people detained in these detention centres is 1133 (as on 25.6.2019).

The number of persons who have been kept in these detention centres for more than a year is 769 (as on 25.6.2019).

The number of persons who have been kept in these detention centres for more than three years is 335 (as on 25.6.2019).

It also added that free legal aid is being provided to detenues by District Legal Service authority who are in need of it.
