After almost 10 years, the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has called for Assam bandh on January 8 in protest against the Centre's decision on the much debated Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

While addressing a press conference on Saturday in Guwahati, leaders of AASU and 30 other organisations said that though they do not want to call a bandh, the current socio-political situation in the State have compelled them to call a 11-hour bandh from 5AM on January 8. They leaders also said that they would observe 'Black-Day' on January 7, when JPC will Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 to the parliament.

"We will never accept any Bill which goes against the Assam Accord," said AASU adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya, adding, "BJP has proved that they want to safeguard the Bangladeshis."

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while speaking at a public rally in Silchar on Friday, made it clear that the government is going to pass the much debated Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 on the ongoing session of the parliament.
