Asom Divas: Sonowal greets people

Since 1996, December 2 has been celebrated in Assam as the Sukaphaa Day, or Assam Day(Axom Divawkh ), to commemorate the advent of the first king of the Ahom kingdom in Assam after his journey over the Patkai Hills.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal onMonday greeted the people of Assam on the occasion of Asom Divas.

Asom Divas or Sukapha Divas is observed to commemorate the adventof the first king Chaolung Sukapha of the Ahom kingdom in Assam after hisjourney over the Patkai Hills.

Chaolung Sukapha was a great leader and a brave warrior under whose guidance a solid process of unification and assimilation of various ethnic groups in Assam was set in motion.

"In the words of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, my tributes to the architect of Bor Asom, Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha on #AsomDiwas", CM Sonowal tweeted.

Chaolung Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom kingdom reigned from1228 to 1268 AD, had set up the 600-year-old Ahom kingdom in Upper Assam.
