Assam DIG accused of sexual abuse

Assam Police is investigating a senior Indian Police Service(IPS) officer Abu Sufian (50), who is presently serving as deputy inspectorgeneral, Railways in the state.

The investigation has been initiated after his subordinatesfiled multiple complaints of sexual harassment between 2008 and 2017 against Sufian.

Three complaints had been forwarded to the internal complaintscommittee (ICC) for enquiry in April, more than two months after they were sentto the Director General of Police, Assam, in January 2019.

The ICC of Assam Police under the aegis of Violet Baruah, adeputy inspector general has been investigating the case.

The matter came to light in January when a woman constable approached the commanding officer of one of the battalions where she is posted, on how she was sexually harassed by Sufian in 2017. After that, two more victims came out with details of sexual harassment, their complaints were forwarded to the DGP's office in January.
