Assam: Lovlina Borgohain qualifies for Tokyo Olympics

Assam's pride Lovlina Borgohain becomes the first female pugilist from the state to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

The young athlete Lovlina would be seen fighting it out in the Women's 69kg Welterweight category at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Notably, she is the first woman from Assam to represent India at the Olympics.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a tweet with a congratulatory message for the athlete that reads, "A matter of great joy and pride for us as
@LovlinaBorgohai becomes the first woman pugilist from Assam to qualify for the #Olympics.

My heartiest Congratulations to you Lovlina. You have our finest wishes for the big moment.

May you continue to shine and succeed."

Lovlina Borgohain is a resident of Golaghat district in Assam and comes from a middle-class background. As per reports, her father is a businessman, while her mother is a housewife. She also has two elder twin siblings.

As per sources, Lovlina started off with Muay Thai, but later switched to boxing when an opportunity presented itself in her way.

Reportedly, she participated in a trial conducted by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) at her school where she caught the eye Padum Boro – the coach under whom she started practicing the sport in 2012. She also mentions that she has always been inspired by her siblings.
