Pratidin Bureau

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ADMA) in a bulletin said that nearly 32000 people have been affected in floods so far. The bulletin said that 31,970 people were impacted in Biswanath and Lakhimpur districts.

The ASDMA in its bulletin further said that Lakhimpur is the worst-affected with 31,959 people reeling under the flood.

According to the Central Water Commission, no river in Assam is flowing above the danger mark as of now. At present, 22 villages are submerged and 413.3- hectare crop area has been damaged across three districts in Assam, ASDMA said.

Embankments, roads and other infrastructure have been damaged by flood waters in Baksa and Biswanath districts, it said.

Massive erosions have also taken place in several locations of Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Goalpara, Kamrup, Morigaon and Nalbari. "Urban flooding" was seen in Kamrup Metropolitan, Kamrup and Nalbari districts, the bulletin added.

Meanwhile, Water Resource Minister Pijush Hazarika took stock of the erosion caused by the river Brahmaputra on the north bank from Jahajghat in Tezpur to Bhorasingari near Goruduba under Thelamara Circle travelling the entire stretch in a boat on Monday.

The Minister visited Depota outfall, Jharoni, Tinikhoria, Gabharu outfall, Kheroni, Teliagaon, Bhorasingari before alighting at Goruduba under Thelamara Revenue Circle.

The Minister inspected the ongoing temporary protection works currently underway at various locations and directed the Water Resources department officials to ramp up the erosion control works along this stretch as works of permanent nature cannot be taken up at the moment due to rising waters of the river Brahmaputra.

The Minister said, once the flood season is over, a project to build a new embankment along with protection works in the Singri-Basasimalu area under Borchalla LAC would be taken up in order to prevent the area from getting inundated by floods every year.
