Assam observes Bhai Dooj

Soon after Diwali comes Bhai Dooj or Bhai Phuta, a festival that celebrates the beautiful bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters pray for their brothers' well being and long life, while brothers vow to protect their sisters. This year, it falls on November 9.

Nepali as well as the Bengali communities in Assam have been celebrating this festival of bond with great enthusiasm. On this auspicious day, sisters invite their brothers home and apply 'teeka', pray to the God and wish for their brothers long and prosperous lives. Brothers present gifts in return.

According to priests, the Bhai Phuta celebration starts from Pratipath and ends on Titiya and the celebration is done according to traditional rituals.

The festival is very similar to Raksha Bandhan. It is known by different names in various communities of India like in Gujrati, Marathi and Konkani-speaking group of people call it Bhau Beej, Bengalis call it Bhai Phota and Nepali as Bhai Teeka.
