BJP promoting religious separatism : Prafulla Mahanta

Pratidin Bureau

Former Chief Minister of Assam Prafulla Manhanta slammed Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) on Friday and said that the government is promoting religious separatism in Assam.

India is a secular country and it is wrong on BJP's part to polarize  the people of Assam on the basis of religion, said Mahanta

Addressing a press meet in Guwahati on Citizenship ship Bill, Mahanta  along with former Rajya Sabha member (AGP) Kumar Deepak Das said that AGP has been opposing the bill since 2015.  Asom gana Parishad  (AGP) has met many opposition parties and leaders to seek their support to oppose the bill. Mahanta also said that the opposition parties have  assured to oppose the bill at the Rajya Sabha.

Mahanta  demanded a clear stand from the state government on  implementing the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Taking a jibe at Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Mahanta said Sonowal has been supporting the bill adamantly whereas the other North East state Chief Minsters have decided to oppose it.
