Burha PS case: NCW takes suo-motu cognizance

Pratidin Bureau

The National Commission for Women under Section 10(1) of the National Commission for Women Act, 1990 has taken cognizance of the media reports in regard to Burha Police case, wherein it was reported that three sisters have filed a complaint of being stripped naked and tortured inside a police station in Darrang district. It is further reported that one of the three women said she was pregnant and allegedly has a miscarriage due to the torture.

The Commission has condemned the treatment meted out to the women at the outset and has taken Suo-motu cognizance of this issue. The Commission is anguished with such alleged misconduct on part of the police officials, who have ill-treated women not involved in any crime but suspected to know the whereabouts of an alleged criminal.

The Commission further added that the role of the police officials is to help uphold law and order impartially and protect people, especially women. It is unbelievable how they have treated these women, who are not even alleged criminals.

The commission is of the view that the alleged officials should be dealt with very strongly so that they do not repeat such an act in the future.

The Commission has directed DGP Assam and asked him to take up the matter urgently and ensure that the miscreants are given stern punishment.
