Chirang youths held for smuggling arms

Two youths hailing from Chirang district have beenarrested and country-made pistols, five live cartridges and cash worth Rs 55thousand have been seized from them on Sunday.

An officer of Chirang Police Station said the accusedwere identified as Farman Ali and Mafijul Islam. The officer also said that theaccused were nabbed from Basugaon area, based on a tip-off and added that theycame to sell the firearms from Rangsaidham area in the district. Chirang Policeand 15 Garhwal Rifles of Indian Army carried the joint operation to nab theyouths.

It may be mentioned here that arrested Farman Ali wasearlier apprehended in connection with a kidnapping case.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused received the arms from a person in Rangsaidham and were smuggling it from the area to Basugaon under the district.

Offences against the accused have been registered at Basugaon Police Station and the officer also informed that further investigation was underway, to determine how they smuggled the arms and who was the intended buyer of the same.
