For the first time, in Assam elections will have a serious player in the race: the National People's Party (NPP). All of a sudden, what has conventionally been a two-sided contest is now set to turn into a triangular electoral fight, with its attendant consequences.

In a major political development, NPP Chief-cum-Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma had formally announced the state committee on Wednesday.

Retired IPS Officer-cum-Former AGP leader Dilip Borah, Divas Phukan and Former MLA Abdul Aziz have joined the party.

The retired IPS Officer Borah had quit AGP on February 21 and joined NPP. He has been formally appointed as the convener of NPP (Assam).

The National People's Party is a state-level political party in India, though its influence is mostly concentrated in the state of Meghalaya. The party was founded by P A Sangma after his expulsion from the NCP in July 2012.
