Dr Gohain, Akhil Gogoi, Manjit Mahanta granted bail

The Gauhati High Court (HC) has granted bail to literary critic, poet and social scientist Dr Hiren Gohain, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) chief Akhil Gogoi and Manjit Mahanta on Friday. Earlier on Thursday, a suo moto case registered against the trio by Latsahil Police station or their recent utterance supporting independence from India.

The police has been asked to submit a case diary by the High Court. The case was defended at the HC by Arup Borbora.

There had been a massive uproar against the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)  government in the state after the suo moto case against Dr Gohain, Gogoi and Mahanta.

Various organisations and political parties labeled the BJP a fascist government and said this would lead to more severe situation in the state in the upcoming days. The statement has caused great uproar in social media both for and against.

However intelligentsia of Assam decried the police move pointing out that Dr Gohain's statement was more of seeking attention from the Centre not propagating secession.
