Drug Peddling in NE on the Rise: Biren Singh

Security has been beefed up along the Manipur-Myanmar border to tackle drug peddling in the border areas. Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh said that drug peddling in the border areas are on the rise and therefore, the security has been beefed up to curb the menace.

According to report, police, Assam Rifles and other securityforces have increased patrolling in the border areas.

While speaking in the Assembly, Biren Singh said that the drugpeddlers are mainly targeting the school-going children and hence it becamepertinent to increase the vigil to try and put a check into it.

Singh also informed that security personnel and the centralanti-narcotics cells, on an average seized drugs and other contraband itemsthrice a week.

Moreover, police said that international drug peddlers in largenumbers have been entering India through border areas.

Three persons were arrested last week with drugs worth Rs. 400crore, which police said was the biggest haul in the Northeast so far.

According to sources, smugglers have been using the unmanned 364km border with Manipur and the construction of the 10-km boundary wall nearMoreh was also suspended following objections raised by Myanmar.
