Family cries foul play as youth allegedly commits suicide after escaping from Panikhaiti police custody

Pratidin Bureau

In a shocking incident, a youth named Chandan Bharali allegedly committed suicide near a hill side on Tuesday night after escaping from Panikhaiti Police station.

However, the family of the deceased finds it difficult to believe that Bharali escaped the police station at the middle of the night. The family has accused the police of killing him and creating a different scenario to term it as a suicide.

According to the police, Bharali escaped from the police station due to negligence of a home guard named Sanjeev Talukdar.

The youth, who belonged to Chaygaon in Kamrup district of Assam, was arrested on Tuesday for an alleged rape attempt on a girl he met through Facebook. The family however has a different story to tell.

According to locals and the family, Bharali was in a love relationship with girl for a long time and he had been wrongly accused and arrested.

On Wednesday, people gathered outside the Panikhaiti police station and protested against the alleged murder. Locals have also accused that the police sent the body for postmortem to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital without even informing the family about it.
