FIR against Himanta for ‘pro-Bangladesh’ slogans

Former general secretariesof Cotton University Students' Union (CUSU) on Tuesday evening filed an FIR againstAssam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at the Panbazar Police Station forchanting 'pro-Bangladesh' slogans in the floor of Assam assembly during theongoing session.

Terming him 'notorious',the general secretaries alleged, "Such utterance by the accused person has thepotential to promote enmity between different groups residing in the state on theground of race and language." The former general secretaries includedAmlanjyoti Dewry, Jintu Thakuria, Pranjal Kalita, Deepjyoti Das, RajshekharKalita and Hirakjyoti Borah.

It may be mentioned herethat the minister chanted the slogans when some opposition MLAs were protestingagainst the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the assembly.

The former generalsecretaries also alleged that this was not the only instance that Himanta hasmade such remarks. "Through series of remarks he has been trying to createdivision in the society with his passing through a fragile existence." theyfurther added.

They requested to initiatean investigation regarding the incident and to arrest him under Section 153 (A)of IPC.
