Gauhati HC Orders State EC To Declare BTR Poll Dates

The Gauhati High Court (GHC) has ordered to declare the election date of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) by November 20. The Election Commission has been asked to declare the dates within November 20.

The order was issued based on a PIL seeking to conduct the BTC election. The court also instructed to issue election notification.

Hearing a PIL (59/2020) filed on the BTC (Bodoland Territorial Council) election, a division bench of the Gauhati High Court has asked the SEC (State Election Commission) to initiate the process for BTC election.

The High Court bench comprising Chief Justice (acting) N Kotiswar Singh and Justice Manish Choudhury asked the SEC to conduct the polls "in terms with the decision of the Council of Ministers' meeting held on October 7, 2020".

Earlier the state election commission said that it will declare the poll dates after Bihar election result.

It is noteworthy in the light of COVID-19 pandemic, this year the BTC election will be conducted in ballots.
