Group clash over ‘mobile handset theft’ in Goalpara, one killed, 28 injured

One person was killed and 28 others injured in a clash between two groups at Badlamari Char area in Golapara district.

The slain person was identified as Safiur Rahman. Tension prevailed in Goalpara Riverine (char) areas after the clash.

Goalpara police said that clash broke out between two groups over alleged theft of a mobile handset at No 2 Badlamari Riverine area in Goalpara district on nigh of last Friday.

"29 people were injured in the clash. Conditions of some of the injured were critical. The critically injured have been sent to Gauhati Medical College hospital", said a police officer.

Police said that one of the three critically injured in the clash – Safiur Rahman succumbed to his injuries on the way to GMCH. The two other critically injured admitted in GMCH have been battling for life.

Riverine areas in lower Assam have huge immigrant Muslim population and they are economically poor. Frequents cases have been reported from Riverine areas over small matters.
