Hasina raises NRC issue with Modi

Pratidin Bureau

Visiting Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday raised the issue of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) issue during the bilateral meeting with her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.

However, during the talk, it was pointed by the Indian side that NRC in Assam is an ongoing process. "We have to see how situation emerges," government sources quoted as saying by the ANI.

Though Dhaka is concern regarding those excluded from the NRC could be deported, the Bangladesh PM had previously said that her country doesn't foresee any problems with India over the NRC. The issue of deportation has come up after several politicians as well as public organisations demanded the Centre to convince Bangladesh to accept its citizens who had settled in India illegally.

Meanwhile, both the PMs have inaugurated threebilateral projects. The projects include import LPG from Bangladesh, inauguration of the Vivekananda Bhavan at Ram Krishna Mission in Dhaka andinauguration of Bangladesh-India professional skill development Institute atthe Institute of Engineers in Khulna.

Earlier in the day, she also called on ExternalAffairs Minister S Jaishankar today. Hasina will also be meeting President RamNath Kovind later in the day.
